This is the classic choice for a wildlife-friendly, stock-proof country hedge. In late spring, it lives up to its nickname 'May-blossom' by covering itself in clouds of scented white flowers, which are a vital source of nectar for pollinators. These are followed in autumn by glossy red fruits, known as 'haws', which provide essential winter food for birds like Redwings and Fieldfares. It is incredibly robust, growing vigorously in almost any soil or situation, including exposed and coastal sites. Its sharp thorns make it an excellent natural security barrier.

It is best planted as part of a mixed native hedge alongside Blackthorn, Hazel, and Field Maple to maximise biodiversity. To ensure the plants establish a strong and extensive root system, we recommend using Rootgrow when planting. To support strong structural growth and a thick, dense hedge, apply Levington Fish, Blood & Bone in early spring.
