'Paul's Scarlet' is arguably the most popular ornamental hawthorn in the UK. It is celebrated for its breathtaking floral display in May, when its rounded crown becomes almost entirely obscured by thousands of tiny, double, scarlet-pink blossoms that look like miniature roses. These flowers are a vital nectar source for bees and other pollinators. The tree features dark green, glossy, lobed leaves that provide a dense canopy throughout the summer before turning warm shades of yellow and bronze in autumn.

As the leaves fall, they reveal clusters of small, deep red fruits known as haws. These are highly decorative and serve as an important winter food source for birds, particularly thrushes and blackbirds. 'Paul's Scarlet' is a "tough-as-nails" tree, thriving in almost any soil condition and standing up remarkably well to urban pollution, coastal winds, and exposed sites. Its thorny branches also make it a safe haven for nesting birds. To help this tree establish its deep root system and overcome any transplant shock, we recommend using Rootgrow when planting.
