This is one of the best purple-leaved shrubs for general garden use, offering interest across multiple seasons. In late winter, before the leaves appear, the bare branches are draped in long, purple-tinged catkins. As spring arrives, the large, heart-shaped leaves emerge a deep, intense plum-purple. While the colour may soften to a dark green-bronze by late summer, it remains a striking backdrop for other plants. In autumn, it provides a bonus harvest of delicious filberts (hazelnuts), which are distinguished by their long, tubular purple husks.

It is a vigorous grower that works well as a specimen shrub, a tall hedge, or part of a mixed woodland border. It can also be coppiced (cut hard back) every few years to keep it compact and encourage extra-large, intensely coloured leaves. To ensure the plant establishes a strong root system, we recommend using Rootgrow when planting. To improve soil biology and support healthy, vigorous growth, apply Empathy Biofertiliser Tree and Shrub Food regularly.
