The Japanese Banana is an absolute powerhouse of exotic beauty for the temperate garden. Though it forms a trunk-like 'pseudostem', it is botanically a herbaceous plant, growing new, massive, bright green leaves up to 2 metres long every summer. When given abundant water and food, a mature clump can reach impressive heights, forming a stunning jungle-like feature. In exceptionally mild summers, mature plants may produce highly ornamental, but inedible, banana flower spikes.

The rootstock (rhizome) is hardy down to about -10 °C and will survive winter outdoors with protection, but the aerial leaves and stems will be damaged by frost. Cut the stems down and protect the base with mulch in autumn for reliable spring regrowth. To support the incredibly fast and hungry growth required to achieve spectacular size, we recommend feeding heavily in spring and summer with Well-Rotted Farmyard Manure or Pelleted Chicken Manure. To ensure the plant establishes a strong root system, we also recommend using Rootgrow when planting.
