'Othello' is one of the more robust and "thorny" members of the English Rose family, named for the intensity and drama of its large flowers. The blooms begin as deep crimson buds, opening into heavy, multi-petalled cups that eventually mature into a rich, dusky mauve-pink. The scent is legendary: a heavy, intoxicating classic Old Rose perfume that can fill a garden on a warm evening.
The plant has an upright, somewhat stiff habit and is known for its large, healthy, and exceptionally thorny stems. It is a repeat-flowerer, providing flushes of colour from mid-summer through to the autumn. Because of its vigorous nature and height, it is an elite choice for the back of a border or even for training as a short climber against a fence or pillar. To help it establish a deep, resilient root system to support its heavy blooms, we recommend using Rootgrow when planting.
