'Midwinter Fire' is arguably the most dramatic of all the winter-stemmed dogwoods. Unlike the solid reds or yellows of other varieties, this cultivar offers a stunning "sunset" effect on every branch. In spring and summer, it provides a lush backdrop of soft green leaves and clusters of small white flowers. As autumn arrives, the foliage turns a lovely butter-yellow before falling to reveal the main event: a dense thicket of glowing, multi-colored stems that look like flickering flames in the winter sun.

This variety is slightly slower-growing and less invasive than other Cornus alba types, making it better suited for smaller gardens. It looks most effective when planted in large drifts or positioned where the low winter sun can shine through the branches. To maintain the most vivid "fire" colours, it should be pruned regularly; however, unlike other dogwoods, it often performs best when "one-third" pruned (removing the oldest third of stems each year) rather than being cut entirely to the ground. To ensure a strong, healthy start, we recommend using Rootgrow when planting.
