'Alba' is the pristine, white-flowered form of the Japanese Rose and is widely considered one of the best roses for wildlife and low-maintenance gardening. From early summer, it produces a steady succession of large, single, paper-like flowers of the purest white, each centred with a cluster of bright yellow stamens. The fragrance is divine—delicate yet permeating—and acts as a magnet for bees.

The plant is famous for its "rugose" (deeply veined) apple-green leaves, which stay healthy without the need for chemical sprays, as this species is naturally resistant to blackspot and mildew. In autumn, the foliage turns a lovely, clear yellow, providing a perfect backdrop for the enormous, tomato-like hips that turn a brilliant orange-red. Its dense, suckering habit and formidable thorns make it an ideal choice for an impenetrable, wind-breaking, or security hedge. To ensure it thrives even in poor or sandy soils, we recommend using Rootgrow when planting.
