'Rubra' is a classic variety of the Japanese Rose, celebrated for its rugged beauty and "no-nonsense" reliability. Throughout the summer, it produces large, single, open-faced flowers in a vibrant shade of purplish-crimson, each featuring a cluster of golden-yellow stamens at the centre. The fragrance is intense and traditional, attracting bees from across the garden.

The name rugosa refers to its distinctive "rugose" or crinkled leaves, which are a healthy apple-green and turn a stunning buttery-yellow in the autumn. As the flowers fade, they are replaced by some of the largest and most decorative hips in the rose world—bright orange-red and shaped like cherry tomatoes. It is one of the few roses that is naturally resistant to blackspot and mildew. Its dense, thorny habit makes it an impenetrable and beautiful flowering hedge. To ensure a strong start and help it establish in difficult or sandy soils, we recommend using Rootgrow when planting.
